Now is simply the best time in over 45 years to build a new, renovated, or replacement municipal swimming pool facility. This rare opportunity, for cities to save significant money while providing their citizens with such needed and desired facilities, will not likely last for long.
Interest rates on municipal bonds are the lowest they have been since April of 1967 and construction...

Like many communities throughout the United States, Salina, Kansas was faced with a dilemma in 2008 over what to do with their aging outdoor swimming pool.
Each year the swimming pool required more and more time and resources just to open for crowds of fewer and fewer people. Every year the pool required a larger subsidy from the general fund just to cover operations and maintenance...

Ahhh….there is nothing better than summer recreation at a modern municipal swimming pool. Fun at the pool is a tradition as American as apple pie and baseball. Come to think of it, it has probably surpassed both of these in the hearts of most people.
The City of Belton, Missouri is not a lot different from other American cities with 24,000 residents. The residents take great...

What a facility! 64,000 square feet dedicated to AQUATICS! These are the words written at the beginning of a description pamphlet prepared by the aquatics staff of the Christiansburg Aquatic Center. I must say that I completely agree with their assessment…. What a Facility!
When our aquatic design firm started working on this project in late 2007, we did not know at that time...

This is one of the most misunderstood topics I know of when it comes to swimming pool construction. Let me start out by stating a fact that everyone should know:
All of these products are concrete!
Shotcrete, “concrete”, and gunite are all basically the same product with variations in strength, inherent water-tightness, and methods of construction.
I don’t know how many times...

Anyone who has been around indoor swimming pools knows how awful the air in the room can become if it is not handled correctly.
As swimmers, lifeguards, or pool operators, you begin to dread having to visit facilities that seem to have “out of control” air quality issues. Our noses revolt, our eyes water, and our lungs begin to burn. Many of us have cold or allergy symptoms...

An unpleasant acronym in the aquatic industry is RWI. You may be thinking “what the heck is RWI anyway?” Is it another governmental regulation all of us in the industry now have to deal with?
Actually the term is from the Center For Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and stands for “recreational water illness.” This term covers a broad range of illnesses when...

Municipal swimming pools have evolved over time
Meeting the expectations of today’s savvy citizens when it comes to new or renovated aquatic facilities is much different than it was in the old days.
People now expect their indoor or outdoor aquatic centers to have modern features and amenities. Cities should be very careful when planning new facilities to make sure the new expectations...

As an aquatic engineer who has been designing facilities for many years, one of the more frequent questions I get from owners of indoor pools is “what can we do to get rid of nasty chlorine odors that our customers complain about?” Before I even look at their pool situation, I have a very good idea of the problems they face.
Whenever you have a indoor pool, which inherently...

It’s that time of the year again, when kids all across the country are jumping, diving, or wading into their community pools for summer swimming lessons. No matter where they live, children and their parents can be seen flocking to their nearest pools to learn, play, compete, and cool off. Even those who live in small towns, like we do, are not exempt from this annual rite of...
